Equine Moxibustion

Application of moxibustion at Bai Hui on a horse (c) IF Equine Therapies

Warming the body. Moving the Qi. Supporting deep, gentle healing.

Moxibustion is a Traditional Chinese Medicine technique that uses the gentle, warming properties of burning dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) to stimulate specific acupoints and meridians on your horse’s body. This nurturing heat helps to stimulate circulation, move stagnant energy, and strengthen the body’s natural ability to heal and balance itself.

During a moxibustion session, I carefully use the prepared mugwort on or near specific acupoints, creating a warm, soothing sensation that most horses find deeply relaxing. The heat generated helps to strengthen and tonify the body’s energy systems, making moxibustion particularly effective for horses with conditions related to cold, dampness, or deficiency patterns according to Traditional Chinese Medicine teachings. The warming action can help improve circulation, boost immune function, and support digestive health while promoting overall vitality and wellbeing.

Moxibustion may be particularly beneficial for:

  • Cold-sensitive or aging horses
  • Horses with chronic conditions
  • Chronic muscle tightness or soreness
  • Digestive or reproductive imbalances
  • Boosting recovery
  • Horses that lack energy and vitality or show general weakness
  • Enhancing the effects of acupressure or Tui Na

Moxa is applied with care, never directly on the skin, and sessions are always shaped around your horse’s comfort and receptivity. Regular moxibustion treatments can serve as an excellent complement to other therapies, helping maintain your horse’s health and vitality through the gentle power of therapeutic warmth.

Note: Moxibustion is a complementary wellness therapy and does not replace veterinary care.
